Custom spice rack and paper towel holder for RV

Space in an RV is very limited. We have 5.5 inches between the slot for the stove tops and the RV wall, enough for two rows of spices. If I make the paper towel holder as a vertical rod to the side of the spices, I will have 19 inches below microwave to work with and that is close to the cabinet which only has 16 inches. A roll of paper towels is 11.25 inches and the base piece of oak that I will use is 0.75, so that give me 12 inches for the towels with only 4 or 7 inches above the towels.

The finished project will be oak stained Bombay Mahogany with taller than average Plexiglas fronts on each rack so spices donít fall out while driving down the road.

So here is the question: permanently mounting the vertical towel rod is out. I donít want the rod to wobble after being pulled on a few times, so what is the best way to make it a ďsolidĒ removable rod?

If I drill a round hole in the base Iím afraid that after time shoving the rod in and out to change rolls will make it loose and wobbly. A screw on base sounds more secure, but Iím not sure of the best way to do this.

Any suggestions?

Pics and a sketch would sure go a long way for this topic.

I don't know how long it will take to become wobbly, but if you are really concerned they do make metal inserts like a hollow tube.
