![]() Custom door
Hi. I want to replace a window with a glass door of the same size.
Is Home Depot the best place to start asking about ordering a custom door? (I'm not very picky about what it is made out of, but if you guys think a local lumberyard or somewhere might not be too much more expensive, maybe it would be less hassle and just 'better'?) Thanks, Hammer |

The lumber yard will likely be LESS expensive and you'll likely get your door quicker. One of the yards near me actually has a fabrication shop for doors and windows. They can usually put something together in a couple of days. Home Depot, for example, usually quotes a 10 "working day" turnaround.

Ordering something custom from a box store is only adding a middleman...A middleman with high markup and little or no actual knowledge of what is best for you or how to put it in.
A millwork house or lumberyard that sells doors and windows is a much better option. For goodness' sake, don't pay the box stores to put it in...Talk about markup! |

AMEN! If you're not planning on dong the install yourself, ask the salesman at the lumber yard for a couple of referrals. He deals with the guys who can do the job on a day to day basis. He knows who's been around for a while, deals with the type of repair/remodel you're looking at...........

I'll add my Amen to those already. You'll almost always pay less for a door from a local lumber yard, door supplier. And as previously stated, get it in quicker time.

Cool, thanks for all the replies!
I'm happy not to have to go to HD! I remember one time I almost got beat up at HD because the other guy was so sick of waiting at the millwork desk, and he didn't like that I asked a simple yes/no question out of turn! |
