Not sure where to post this but... A gaming question

Since I can't work, and I can only do reno work on my house for a couple of hours at a time before I tire out, and TV is so boring at times, I was thinking about getting a game console.

But I don't know which one to get. PS4, Xbox 1, Nintendo Switch or go with a PC based gaming desktop?

I like role playing, puzzle solving anything that can help improve my mind, at least whats left of it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks all

KTOWNER.... I don't know anything about games...

But from your posts, I don't think you have anything wrong with your mind.

But anyway, I think if you attach the green wire to the puce wire and invert the converter, you'll be good to go.

Best

Re: Not sure where to post this but... A gaming question

Some games are console-specific or PC-specific. Others are cross-platform. If there's no specific games you want to play, that may not matter much.

PC gaming can be more "serious." Lots of console games are simplistic in comparison. Which maybe somebody would want. Most games are designed to use the regular controller, while most PC games are designed to use mouse and keyboard, so PC games can be more involved simply due to being designed for that. Even with a game that is on both console and PC, the console version can be dumbed down, such as console version of Call of Duty(?) getting "auto-aim."

If you want to play MMOs, would think PC is obviously the way to go. There's also so many PC F2P (free to play) games that you might like those enough to never have to pay money to play the games. Consoles have some too.

Also, you can use a PC for other tasks. A console not so much.

I haven't been much of a gamer for quite a while but am often around people who are. So I'm not an expert on such things but figured posting this post is more helpful than not.

Re: Not sure where to post this but... A gaming question

To be fair and up front here; I'm a card-carrying member of #PCMASTERRACE so I'm biased.

I've got most of the console systems and the only games that "sort-of" impressed me are the new VR ones. (The Star Wars light saber one is fun heh)

However, the whole thing is pretty subjective. Like when the kids were young, we played a console (PS2) game called Champions of Norrath which we all really enjoyed. We also got many years out of online MMO's, and at the same time the kids greatly enjoyed playing tons of solo console games too.

I've always prefered PC's because they're good for more than just games (and because I've been on PCs since they became available to the public.) However, there's a shift in the market today toward mobile and PC's are being "passed over" in favor of mobile games. This leads me to believe that in the future, as much as I gnash my teeth at it, one would probably be advised to sway toward console games.

That said, my personal suggestion is to install a free program called Blue Stacks on your current computer; then you can download a ton of Google Play (android) mobile games to kill time. If you can't find any games you like then you're not out anything but a bit of time - and if you do find one you like then you're not out any money.

-- Blue Stacks has pretty much covered the gaming that my husband and I have the time and desire to play anymore, mostly because there just aren't really any games out there for PC that interest us anymore. (Well okay maybe Total War: Warhammer/Total War: Warhammer II and Civ V. We mostly enjoyed MMO's; and specifically fantasy MMO's so it's a bit of a niche that's basically disappeared.)

Currently we're playing an Android game called Empires & Puzzles, which is kind of a gem match game with "hero" characters you level up and such - a bit of slow PvP, a bit of puzzle matching, a bit of "end goal" stuff all in one so it's a good mix for our tastes. I've also heard really good things about West Game (though I've not had time to play it.) There's another Fantasy one that's advertised on Blue Stacks that I've been meaning to try too, but the names escaping me atm.

Ouch, it is hard to be reminded how far I have fallen behind. Learning fast enough to catch up (for me) is futile.

Enjoy Ktown, but yes you can still work, just in a different way.

It is all about preference,
You can get a great gaming experience with a Xbox One X, most new Games are coming out in 4K. So you'll need a good 4K TV, the Xbox one X and a couple of Games. Maybe an online sub.
Total Cost for that, depending on the Size of the TV, about $1000.

The PC Gaming world, however is a bit more expensive. I have built some serious Gamer Machines before.
The Video Card alone exceeds $1000, the entire Rig could cost you somewhere between $1800 - $3200. And that is without TV.
4K PC Gaming is growing fast, but at a cost.
I have given up on PC Gaming, I got my XBox one X, play some Tomb Raider, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, etc. When I have Time.

That is very serious. Casual gamers can use a card much cheaper. Competitive gamers can use a card much cheaper.

And that's to get better graphics than consoles have.

An old 7950/280/380 card is still plenty for most people. And 470, 1060, 1070, etc. And people may like to turn graphics up to max settings, but even turning them down slightly can be hardly noticeable but take a big load off the card.

KT, do you play chess? My kids and Grandkids are all ChessNuts and
play on line. You can download the App, I believe itís free, and you can
play all over the place.

Re: Not sure where to post this but... A gaming question

@Two Knots , I never really got into chess. My eldest brother tried to teach me but he was so advanced that I never got it. I know the basics, but I just can't see beyond a couple of moves. Which is strange because on other things I can go from A to B to E fairly easily.

I guess my brother just intimidated me too much.

Ah, too bad, all the males in our family are chess players; fascinating game.
My guy taught our kids and all our Grandsons at an early age.

I tried chess games online and used the tutorial mode at the basic level. Lost damn near every game.

Now I play cribbage, I was really into Sim City Build It but I wanted more stuff faster so I would buy credits.

Re: Not sure where to post this but... A gaming question

I really liked Sim City Build It, but wandered away from it for a while - I think I'll go back to it considering how much money I threw into it myself HA

Kind of along the lines of SimCity there's a bunch of city simulator types, and more "RPGish" ones like... uhm, Klondike Adventures I think it was called. I also thought of a kinda nerdy/engineer/thinking one I really enjoyed; Happy Glass. (Basically you have to draw lines to get water into a cup.) I'm not sure if your geeky enough, but I really enjoy one called PC Building Simulator hahaha
