so basically, me trying to make something quick, i knew better, but here's the results. its called knifing. gussets should always be welded to the strong side of the member (in this case the sides of the square tube. there was so much force from torque (shade sail) that the tube basically collapsed right over the gusset. it probably would have survived if i ran this gusset the full length of the tube, but i didnt. i made new brackets that are way stronger, but this is a good lesson.
