Simplicity Elecric Clutch - Smoking!!

Hello All - Please help. Replaced the drive belt on my Simplicity 1693600 Broadmoor. 18 Briggs V-Twin. PTO is locking up and smoking! I removed the electric clutch to replace the drive belt. Now, when I run the tractor without the deck on, the drive belt works fine. After about 2 minutes, with the PTO switch OFF, the electric clutch begins to heat up and gets smoking hot. Upon inspection, the bottom pulley (deck) does not spin freely. After adjustment, I start the engine again and same thing - After about 2 minutes, deck pulley begins turning and unit begins to heat up - PTO switch still off. I did not disconnect the power supply to the clutch when I removed it. What happened? Do I need to replace?

It sounds like you PTO clutch is jammed and not disengaging. Try disconnecting the power to it and see what happens. It still might be jammed in the 'engaged' position.

I disconnected the clutch and was able to operate the tractor for about an hour, pulling an aerator. At that point the clutch started to heat up and start smoking.

It could still be jammed 'engaged'. Does the drive pulley turn free (engine off for safety)? It is an electromagnetic device but there are springs involved so with the power off it may still be engaged or trying to be.

Yes. Drive pulley turns freely with the driveshaft.

Then I'm stumped. I know basically how they work but not enough to know how to diagnose. Good luck.

Re: Simplicity Elecric Clutch - Smoking!!

Replaced the clutch today and it works great! I noticed that the new clutch came with a pre-installed key-way, so I had to get rid of the single long one and go with separate key-way for the drive pulley. Thank you to all -
