Replacing Traction Cable

Toro Model 20020 Self Propel Recycler

Traction cable engaging just fine one second and then the next the cable broke at the "s" link that connects to the handle bell that is pulled to engage the self propel.
1. What are the main reasons the cable breaks like this?
2. What is the proper procedure for replacing the broken one?

The spring end of my cable can be attached to the bracket that pulls tension on the drive belt from the top side of the deck just below the cover unlike some which appear to be a real pain in the backside.

Thanks

Re: Replacing Traction Cable

!. The change in diameter where the swage is on the end makes that the weakest part of the cable and the constant flexing at the same spot almost guaranties that to be the breaking point.
