Re: Old Stihl FS 80 string timmer

It's a 2 cycle engine, almost no chance that rings/cylinder will fix the smoking.

The engine does not have any oil in it so it's not possible for crankcase oil to be pulled past the rings and make it smoke. The only oil in the engine is already mixed with the fuel.

My guess would be the wrong mix ratio or low quality oil. Get some HP ultra from Stihl and mix per direction on the bottle.

Clean the carbon and oil out of the muffler and adjust the air/fuel mixture.

Bad rings can make a two cycle hard to start, not likely to cause the smoke.

He does say in the first post that the ratio is 50:1, This should be the manufacturers specs, hopefully.

If still smoking , something has to be wrong, just a matter of figuring it out.

Nay be as simple as the air filter has gotten saturated, and causing a slight flooding situation.

Re: Old Stihl FS 80 string timmer

Weed whacker operation was a failure. I do not know why I ever thought I could buy someone's wore out equipment and make it suitable for me. These deals just end up nickel and dime, dollar and more dollars ....a person to death messing with them. Geeez, just buy new equipment and end up saving $$$$$ on the long haul.

The aftermarket cylinder head kit was an absolute joke with its puny, substandard furrin parts.

So one old Stihl FS 80 weed whacker is now in little pieces and its remains and the junked aftermarket head kit, all are in the trash for pick tomorrow.

A new Stihl FS56RC most likely will be replacing it next week, while its on sale here.

Greg: Sorry to hear that you junked the thing.

REALLY.

I see advertisements, that Stihl is having a fathers day sale right now on either a gas powered , or an electric one, your choice.

Under $130.00 if I remember correct.

Those old parts might be useful to someone on Craig's, run an ad giving them away, or maybe A $ 10.00 bill.

Or save them and build a unique yard ornament from them.

Still useful, for something.
