My rider just died, help?

I was skidding some disc'd up soil so I can get grass growing and mow it (before I could not mow it, it was plowed and a local person disc'd it up for me), i was doing it with a John deere 125 riding mower and a pallet with 3 cinder blocks, but before that, and hour before it died, i changed the fuel filter, when it died it acted like it ran out of gas but just minutes before I put more in, ao it had almost half a tank, and I tried to start it back up and i heard it making that initial noise but it wouldn't turn over, i waited about 2 or 3 hours and tried it again, it almost turned over but it died, tried again and it just made that initial noise, i tried adjusting the choke and nothing, what could be wrong?

Fresh or old fuel being used ?

Does it turn over at all and just not catch? Can try putting some starter fluid in and seeing if it'll start for a few seconds that way. Will tell you if you have a fuel delivery problem.

Just an FYI, your JD is probably not rated for ground engagement and I would be wary of overdoing it on your transmission especially if you have any hills.

The oil is full, the fuel is fresh, ill have to see what starter fluid is, i think i heard of it before, my uncle has a friend who knows a lot about these things and asked him, he said it could be a bad pump or vacuum tube, fortunately if its the pump that is fairly cheap, normally i just mow with it, or pull a little trailer if i need to get dirt to fill dog holes (that mutt better not let me catch him digging )and a trench a mutt dug in our hillside, didn't know until I was riding down it, was lucky nothing happened

What is the "initial noise"? Can you get a wrench on the flywheel to see if you can rotate the engine?

I second the suggestion to try some starting fluid. If my mower fails to start, I pop off the air filter and give a quick spray of starting fluid directly into the carburetor. Usually fires right up.

Last year my mower died and even the starting fluid did not get it to start. Had no spark, and turned out that the ignition coil died. A replacement from Amazon was about $30 and she runs like new.

Im not sure how to describe the initial noise, just what you expect to hear before it turns over.

I'll have to ask my uncle if he has starter fluid, im curious what it does that fires up an engine, the science/mechanisms of things fascinate me,

With grass, what makes the fall better?

Ill have to look up the ignition coil, fortunately the pump is cheap, 27 with tax, i was afraid it was gonna be 50 - 60 bucks, we already have to put off some fixes for when money is more available (moms laptop screen, which I already replaced a month ago, she wont lower the screen with earbuds on the keyboard again) and put off getting parts for an invention printed, oh well, hopefully the fuel pump replacement will solve my problem, ive noticed it was harder to start before, the uncle things it might have been fixing to fail and changing the filter released a vacuum it was needing or something

It is more explosive than gasoline. Use it sparingly.

Starting fluid can be expensive. It can be explosive, it can wash the oil off the cylinders. Try silicone spray.

There's sure a lot of expensive guessing going on here.:vs_laugh:

All of the usual testing for f and spark plus trying starting fluid won't mean a whole lot until the OP can get the engine to turn over. If it won't turn over on a good battery or jumper cables then there might be a problem with the start switch or solenoid. This assumes the engine is actually free to rotate.

I made a video, after we bought the new fuel pump, havent installed it, we tested the pump already on(he regretted not remembering that test before ) and its moving gas good, https://youtu.be/DQw2In_LDgE

Well you have fuel and the engine turns over. The strength of a spark can be pretty subjective. How did your friend test it? What was the colour of the spark? It could any of: old plugs, old wires, failing coil(s). You also might try cleaning up the connections on both the primary and secondary (plug) side of the coil circuit. The battery connection looks a little corroded over and other connections might be the same.

Have you checked to see if you have compression in both cylinders?
