The Forrest Gump mower

Anyone ever own of one these older Snapper rear engine mowers ? I bought one very used from CL, thinking it would be a perfect fit for my smallish yards. Did not work out that way for me though. It was built well, just really weird to ride as it felt like I riding on a drunk horse.

Re: The Forrest Gump mower

They're made for Golf Course Greens, anything unlevel, or hilly, or bumpy, and you need Dramamine.

Might make a decent mini drag racer though.

Agreed Ed, I have some slopes and rolling grade on my yards and I got sea sick almost , riding it on them.

The golf courses have come a LONG way in their new fairway/greens mowers like they have today, with most of them being Toros designed JUST for GC mowing. A golf course super would probably beat anyone trying to put a old Snapper mower on his GC.

Re: The Forrest Gump mower

I've owned and used one since 2001.

The steering really sucks. I am okay with the ride, not the smoothest but it beats pushing. Over inflating the tires helps a bit with both issues.

The dethatcher front end attachment does a nice job of getting it loose and on top of the grass but not so much with getting it thatch into a pile.

A mulching blade and chute cover means I never rake leaves I just compost them in place.

If I had more room in the garage I might buy something else. Two ice free vehicles and a stored mower are a good trade off for the Snapper's lack of finesse.

Re: The Forrest Gump mower

Looking at the pic it seems as if they may have given up the idea of 2 chains holding the rear of the deck up. Those were self adjusting while mowing if a bump was encountered and it sure made for a strange looking cut on a partial of grass. I finally fixed mine and then the factory at one time put the chain through a flex sheath. I guess they didn't think the zip tie I threaded through the chain looked sophisticated enuff.
