Engine Running and Idling funny
I don't know if I can explain this well, but here goes.

I have a Honda self propelled mower with a 5.5 HP motor. It is only about 7 years old but it's running rather strange.

It starts first pull every time, I have changed the plug and replaced the oil and air filter is the funny part.

Last year, when it was under power (blade engaged and mowing) it ran fine..good power. When I would stop the blade to empty the bag, it would rev down..then back up, then down..and so on...I noticed the governer (I think) on the carb was just moving back and forth by itself. I didn't worry too much as it worked just fine while cutting and never died.

This year it is doing the same thing, however it is doing it while engaged and mowing. I decided to take the carb off and clean it out which I did. It still has the same symptoms...and also defintately has lost some of its power.

Does anyone have any ideas what would be causing this?

Fresh gas is in it, new plug, new oil, new air filter...It does not smoke at all.

Also one other thing I noticed, If I try to lower the power (to a slower idle) it does just die.

Could this be as simple as a cable adjustment or something?

Thanks for any advice anyone can give.

When you cleaned the carb---did you open it up and clean the float bowl and needle valve?

I did...everything in there looked really good too. I'm really at a loss on this one.

Almost every power tool I owned that used gas started doing this when they came up with ethanol in the fuel.
I had my Z turn in the shop 4 times from just water in the fuel.

I now only use nonethanol fuel in everything and now things start, no more rotted out fuel hoses and they now idle without having to run at half choke.

There's lots of places around here that sell it because I'm in a big boating area. Every marina, and even gas stations sell it.

There are additives you could also add to the fuel that counter act the effects of the ethanol.

That would be cool if it were as simple as that...I will go see what I can find. We are in a desert area, so not a lot of marine supply...but I'll check out the auto supply store.

I'd be checking the local lawn mower shop to see if they know someplace.
Most have notices about not using ethinol fuel.

I ran ethanol in all my mowers/trimmers/blowers for years (state mandated) and never had anything like this happen as a result.

Small engine surging is almost always the result of a fuel problem. You've almost certainly got something going on in your carb. Probably a plugged, or partially plugged, idle orifice. It's a very common problem, because those things are TINY.

I don't know how handy you are with removing, disassembling, cleaning and reassembling a carb, but that's probably what's needed.

Handy...yes....dealing with tiny things...yes:blush:...I did take it apart and clean it, but all roads lead to the fact that I probably missed something. I am going to do it again on Friday and see if maybe I didn't get it good and clean....

I will update
