Craftsman mower

Hey DIYers! I have a Craftsman Eager 1 push mower with a Tecumseh engine. It starts and runs beautifully for about 2 minutes. After that it starts an occasional sputter/misfire but continues to run. About a minute later it just dies, like I shut it off. Then I have to wait about 1/2 an hour before I can start it again. I've replaced the air filter, loosened the gas cap and torn the carb apart twice and sprayed the heck out of it with carb cleaner. When it dies, if I immediately loosen the nut on the bottom of the carb, gas pours out, so it's getting gas. Is it possible that as the coil warms up it starts to malfunction (hence the sputter/misfire), then as it continues to warm up, just stops working altogether (hence dies like I shut it off)?

Dumb question, but how old is the gas you're putting in it? My Toro did the exact same thing...mow two rows, it dies, wait 1/2 hour, same thing. Fresh gas and some seafoam corrected the problem.

Try a higher octane gas with no ethanol in it or use a capful of stabil mixed in with a gallon of gas if you can't find gas with no ethanol.

Had the same problem on my new mower. Read the owners manual and found the above information. I don't know what it is, but the new mowers don't like ethanol. Don't know if this will solve your problem, just a suggestion. You may have other problems other than the type of gas you're using.

Another suggestion, ask in the tractor and mower forum under landscaping/lawn care, they have a couple good small engine repair experts that frequent that forum, they may know what your problem is.

Are you sure the choke is coming off?

I bought the gas not even 2 weeks ago. I may try putting some Stabil in the tank and see if it helps....I ran it with gas cap off and it still died...It's a manual choke, so yes it's coming off.

Update: I put some Stabil in the gas today and started it. Same result. I immediately tried to start it again and was getting a backfire when I pulled the cord.

Could it be a warped exhaust valve?

I'll have to find my notes later. I have a craftsman Eager1 green deck that my father gave me 7 years ago when I got my first house. I remember using it when I was in middle school. I had a similar issue and rebuilt the carb on it I believe after my first winter with it. once fixed, it runs like a dream. Just pulled it out and it started on the second pull.

Does yours have the primer bulb? And are you tightening the screw on the bottom completely? It almost sounds like it's not getting enough fuel when running to sustain it, but some is getting by when you open it up. Sometimes the screw on the bottom is used to meter the gas too.

What is the model number of the mower? That would help with some diagnosis.

Do this quick no cost no frills preliminary compression test.

When it dies remove the spark plug. If it be difficult to hold your thumb / finger on the plug hole while cranking that's usually good nuff to run. If you can easily hold your finger or thumb on the hole you've found the sputter die no start problem.

I'd bet that it's your spark module - which is basically a coil. It's about a $50 part, and sits under the flywheel.
