Can only experts sharpen blades?

My Honda self propelled mower has 2 blades. They're off. A neighbor with a grinding wheel offered to sharpen them but said they might vibrate if they aren't balanced.

I've known lots of neighbor's who sharpen their own blades. But that was a single blade. I don't know what to do.

Should I take them to a Mower Store?

Phone the dealer and ask what they do to balance blades. if anything.

Re: Can only experts sharpen blades?

It's pretty easy to balance the blades as you sharpen them with one of these:
Oregon Lawn Mower Blade Balancer 42-100 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VYFOJM..._iBXCCb121MBHE
If you buy a second set of blades, you can keep one set sharp while the other is mounted

They will definitely vibrate if not balanced, and if they don't know how to balance them, then forgetabout them doing it.

It takes a little more work, but you can do it yourself with a BASTARD FILE, and elbow grease, a vise is useful, as well as a way to balance them.

Re: Can only experts sharpen blades?

I sharpen blades with a 4" angle grinder (clamp them to work table) then place them on a horizontal rod, pin, or screw through hole in center and if they stay at horizontal they are balanced. If not grind a little more of heavy side (the one that hangs a little lower) and check again. When the blade will sit horizontal with no droop on end it is in balance.
Takes a little practice, but is effective. Been doing this now for 50+ years with excellent results.

ps: see nealtw above. Good video and explains it well.

I've always sharpened my own blades; many different ways of making sure they're balanced.

I couldn't imagine paying someone to sharpen a lawn mower blade. If you take the same amount of metal off of each side it should stay balanced. I also hang the blade on a nail to judge if it's still balanced.

I hang them on a nail to keep them off the floor.

Re: Can only experts sharpen blades?

At any given time I own about 7 mowers.
I sharpen mine with a 4-1/2" right angle grinder with what's called a flap wheel.
https://www.mscdirect.com/browse/tnp...waAg8-EALw_wcB
It's far faster and better then any pedistal grinder.
I can sharpen and balance all three blades on one of my riders in about 5 min.
Of the hundreds of blades I've sharpen by far the worst ones I've seen are those double blades on a Honda mower.
There so thin you can almost bend them by hand, they wear out fast, hit one thing and there trash.

Re: Can only experts sharpen blades?

Don't really have anything new to add, but only to reinforce what others have already said. I clamp them in my bench vise and sharpen with the right angle grinder. If you find the grinder intimidating, then a file will work, just going to take longer. I have always just held the blade with a screw driver to check balance, but certainly nothing wrong with using a clamped nail to hold it.
Once you get the hang of it, it's much easier to keep them sharp by sharpening frequently then it is to let them go for long periods.

Re: Can only experts sharpen blades?

Like Yodaman said, not much to add. I normally use a bench grinder and that plastic cone thingy. One thing to remember is that the finer the edge you put on a blade the faster it will dull - you're cutting grass, not carving meat. A word of caution if using a powered grinder - work slowly until you get comfortable with the process so you don't overheat the steel.

I too use a 4" angle grinder and a Norton flap style sanding disc.

I've had one of these little balancers since the early 1980's. It's less than $5.
