Blown motor?

I have a 8yr old Husqvarna riding mower with Briggs & Stratton 21 HP V-Twin motor.
Today, after running for a few minutes the engine screeched, made some other scary noises and stopped.

- The motor does turn over but VERY easy. I can spin the fan blades by hand. Lost compression?
- Took out spark plugs, one cylinder moves, the other doesn't. Broken connecting rod?

What do you all think:
1) Worth trying to repair the motor?
2) Get the 22hp Harbor Freight motor and bolt it on ($699)?
3) Get a new Briggs motor ($1200!!!)
4) Get a new mower

Re: Blown motor?

You definitely got a broken connecting rod, maybe worse. If the motor turns over very easily it doesn't even like the other cylinder is getting good compression may have further damage on that side of the engine. It's very unlikely that the motor is worth salvaging unless you can find somebody to his another one similar to yours that can be used for parts. I really don't know anything about Harbor Freight motors so I certainly can't comment on their long-term dependability.

Given the price of the new Briggs motor I probably wouldn't even consider that and would probably buy a new lawnmower before going that route.
