Is this a new mower or a new problem with an older mower? Some engines have a fuel solenoid that shuts off the fuel flow in the carburetor, and, on some anyway, the engine manufacturer says to shut the engine off at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, in order to avoid backfire. I know, this sounds counterintuitive, but, as I understand, the rationale is that once the key is off the engine will continue to spin under its' own momentum just long enough to evacuate the excess fuel and not dump it into the exhaust where it explodes causing the backfire. Anyway, its' an engine problem, so you need the make and model of that, and can post back here or check the engine manufacturer's site for more information. Or it may even be in the manual for the mower, but it's something that doesn't always show up there for some reason.
