14hp vanguard engine.

Before I put my mower away last year, the pto stayed on. I just figured i would fix it this year. Well the engine appeared to be seized and i followed peoples advice on draining oil and taking spark plug out and spraying wd 40 up in the chamber. Then I changed the filter and added oil. Top of engine was able to spin by hand. Got it started and it ran for 10 mins and I left the deck off and the pto didn’t appear to be on. Then all of a sudden it goes clunk and stops. Can’t turn the top of engine by hand. All you can do is go counter clockwise a tad and then go clockwise and it stops with a clunk

Re: 14hp vanguard engine.

It doesn't sound good for your pocketbook. The 1st thing I would do is pull the head and see if you can see anything from there. I'm guessing you will find the cylinder walls are severely damaged. If that's the case it's time for new engine.

It sounds like right now you're PTO problem is a minor one compared to the engine problem. Do you know how the PTO is engaged? Does it have an electric clutch or mechanical 1? If you get the engine running good shouldn't be too hard to troubleshoot the PTO.
Windows on Wash and lenaitch like this.

I agree that it doesn't sound good and I'm not sure the engine and PTO problems are related.

I had to Google 'Vanguard' engines to find they are a line made by Briggs and Stratton. They appear to be overhead valve engines which, by the sounds of your response, suggests that you might want to find a repair shop unless you are handy and can find a repair manual.
