Quartz Desktop Support

Having new quartz countertops installed in laundry room, thought would be nice to have an office desk “nook” in one of the corners. Going to take the countertop quartz and lower it to desk height, but not sure how much support I need.

In my mind, I’m thinking of building a 2” lip/cleat around the five sides of the pentagon shape. Or...would it be better to build a lip and then put a 3/4” plyboard substrate for the quartz to attach to?

Back wall space is about 48” x 48”.
They are coming to measure countertops this week and would like to have a clear though before they arrive.

Re: Quartz Desktop Support

I vote to put a 3/4 ply substrate.

Most stone countertops are brittle, and any stress in the middle of an unsupported thin slab is going to be weak.

I know that you do not plan to have any weight sitting in the middle of the desk, but I have seen people forget for a second and be standing on things like this.

So I always try to build in strength for safety.

Re: Quartz Desktop Support

i'd also add a 2x4 stiff leg support from the cove corner (baseboard) to another 2x4 screwed underneath the 3/4",,, ply will sag a bit over the yrs + things get stacked on the c-top,,, don't ask me how i know this - i just know

Re: Quartz Desktop Support

here's another thought,,, right next to the washer/dryer ? wet clothes can be heavy,,, c-tops are like a garage - if you have the space available, you'll fill it
