Flagstone on top of slate?

A friend of mine is having a contractor replace slate with flagstone on outdoor patio.

The contractor wants to install over existing slate, this seems wrong to me slate being very smooth.

Can flagstone be properly installed over slate?

Does 11k seem high for roughly 20x20 area?

Without knowing any details, you are asking a question that is impossible to answer.

Can Flagstone be installed over slate? What details would you like?

I already know the price is super high.

Re: Flagstone on top of slate?

The flagstone needs to be bedded down in wet concrete or have a layer of sand in between otherwise the flagstone can crack when walked upon and the exact spots where it touches the slate underneath are unfavorable.

A Picture of the existing patio.
The condition of the area, I.E. wet, dry, mushy, solid, etc.

any broken old slate, evenness, level, slope, any grass growing in the crevasses,

A lot of factors warrant the high pricing, other than the material.

Like the amount of work involved in properly preparing the existing before a good flagging is applied.

Am I reading it right, $11,000?

Sure seems a wee bit pricey.

What condition is the slate in?

What's under the slate, concrete? Compacted stone? Garden dirt? Other?

How does the contractor propose installing the flagstone? Flagstone can be "installed" just by throwing it down onto dirt or grass.

Lets of questions to ask the contractor.

And get 2 or 3 more bids.
