concrete deck footings...below freezing question

Hello,

we are beginning to build the deck Saturday...the High is 35 and the low is 23

how concerned should I be with the concrete footings going in that day if accelerator is used?

I've heard it being very frowned upon but I have also heard of no issues with concrete setting below freezing....

it will also be quicksetting concrete and not a large surface area, just deck footings

thoughts? thanks

Re: concrete deck footings...below freezing question

I wouldn’t bother with accelerator. It just helps the initial set come faster, it doesn’t gain strength any faster. I’d wait at least 7 days before subjecting it to any load, unless you have concrete using Type III cement (hi-early).

As far as the temperature, eh, I’ve poured in colder. Just cover it with blankets after initial set to keep as much heat in as possible.

It’d be best to cover them as closely as possible, like with a blanket, but as long as they’re covered that’s better.

Nailed it Mort. I have to recommend that you try to get to that 4 feet. Just to be safe. Concrete blankets aren’t cheap but at least use a 6 mil BLACK poly and keep it covered as long as you can.
