Can concrete get mold

There is a mold and moisture issue. Removing the plaster took care of the smell, but there is still moisture in areas of the rug and in the next closet. Concrete is directly under lime plaster no lath and suspect brick or something? I have pictures, is this mold or should i just focus on plaster

Re: Can concrete get mold

Concrete can hold moisture which is one of the ingredients mold has to have to grow, get rid of the moisture and there will be no mold. You need to stop the moisture from entering first - roof or siding.

How do I know where it'ss entering? That particiular area of the wall read 24-30 on a moisture meter and there is an old pipe. I can look higher tomorrow but surroundding it it wasn't nearly as bad, not even the side that has a bubble in the plaster

Re: Can concrete get mold

In addition to moisture, mold needs organic material to feed on: wood, paper, anything

Was there paper, old-style horsehair, whatever as part of the plaster? If it is mold, it may just be a residual stain on the concrete.

And as Mark pointed out, your first task is to find and fix the source of the moisture.

Re: Can concrete get mold

I really need to know how to do that. Do I follow the moisture meter? Go on the roof?

Re: Can concrete get mold

Your moisture meter should help. I'd visually inspect the exterior of that wall along with the roof. Some leaks are easier to spot than others.

Isn't lichen growing on a rock, some kind of a mold?

And it only needs a rock and water to grow.

So I wonder how true that is.

Just curious, not trying to be argumentative.

Maybe not: Lichen definition is - any of numerous complex plantlike organisms made up of an alga or a cyanobacterium and a fungus growing in symbiotic association on a solid surface (such as on a rock or the bark of trees).

Re: Can concrete get mold

I've always heard that mold needs 3 things to grow; moisture, food source and heat. Remove any one and it goes stagnant.

Thats the problem THere's a large patch area that read higher than the rest. It goe up the wall to a point then starts to go down. then it does this for some areas as well. I need more pics.

I was rearranging t his tall heavy bookshelf nothing to do with mold and decided to clean it and tipped it over and there was norway rat feces and it was very moist with wood rot underneath the carpet. They had carved a hole separate from the mouse hole I filled into the room that has the mold. This area is in between bathroom and the room with the problem. I thought I've found itt! This area didn't read high at all. Neither did the bathroom.

I think is it a leak between the toilet and shower? Do I need to recaulk? But there's no read on the meter. The moisture is there even when it oesn't rain but I dk about showers.

Points: I did some concrete filler in some holes after demolding and sanding the area and a few days later a spot turned a rusted color. Thoughts? More pics on the way.

Re: Can concrete get mold

]okay so i did some ****ty measurements and moisture metered the hell out of my areas. T

The problem spots average beginning where the door opens and 6 foot across and five foot up. There is a bathroom behind it. and some inches of a bookshelf. The bathroom does not go out towards the book shelf.

The area highlighted in white is filled with moisture averaging 25. I started with blue and 20 but that was too much. There are purple areas that go off the charts

Can anyone tell if this is galvanized steel or copper? Replacements were made and I don't know if it's in use, but it's moisture levels were high directly on it.

Re: Can concrete get mold

Use a magnet to tell if copper or steel.

If steel it sticks, if copper it won't.
