Best Way to Degrease Oil Stained Concrete for Painting

I need to clean up some oil stained concrete, but I can't use a pressure washer or call in any companies that specialize in a clean up like that. The concrete was painted and then had used engine oil spilled on it for 6 years without proper clean up. The paint has gone away in the main area used to work on cars. All I can do is scrub and mop up and take the sludge away to dispose of elsewhere. I've been messing around with purple power. The goal is get the concrete clean enough to paint. The sludge will be dried out and then turned in at a city hazardous waste pick up day.

Kitty litter works well.

I use the carb/brake cleans to get off the bulk and then go back with the desiccant (i.e. litter).

TSP works well.

If that don't get it off, I suggest the Redd Foxx method.

He was a spokesman for the FUGG soap company, With the motto
of,

If that don't clean it then FUGG IT.

There are also microbe options that are designed to eat the oil.

Some of the brake or carb cleaners are very flammable. Others like the CRC used in the video are nonflammable.

I forgot to mention that it's not just some stains, but the whole floor is slimed. The middle area is worse, as the paint is worn away there. I want to paint it again, after repairs.

I would get a bunch of kitty litter to absorb the bulk.

Then I would come back with clean litter an the soap options.

Why in the world would you paint it again, just adding never ending maintenance again, you must have a lot of free time on your hands.

Re: Best Way to Degrease Oil Stained Concrete for Painting

The reason I want to paint it is for easy clean up and how it looks. The paint (not sure what product was used) kept the surface from getting ruined by the jerk who was there for 6 years and not cleaning up his oil spills. If the paint didn't get worn away in the middle, the floor would have been a lot easier to clean up.

clarence, you're making our point,,, IF paint were suitable for pedestrian traffic, dirt, & grime, 1 wouldn't need to repaint,,, the minimum i'd suggest is a wtr-bas'd epoxy from either the apron or vest store,,, just pay attn to prep instructions

Re: Best Way to Degrease Oil Stained Concrete for Painting

I didn't mean paint literally. I want to coat it with something that is functional more then for appearances. I don't want the deep clear coat look with the paint chips thrown in when drying. That looks lame to me. I just want a clean smooth surface that's not bare concrete. My main problem is the 6 years of oil that has been soaking into parts of the floor. Purple Power, a brush and a mop has worked great to get the oil and crud off the surface. I'm probably going to have to use heat from a propane torch and or a solvent like brake cleaner to get the oil out of the pores of the concrete before coating/painting.

I'm going to try to find out what was used to coat/paint the floor originally. I don't have much experience with coating/painting concrete, besides using some oil based stuff to paint garage floors and curbs for houses that are flipped. No idea how that stuff holds up with time.

Look into Garage Floor Paint.

I know that high end dealerships have their floors done by a commercial painting company, as well as high school and College training shops have it done annually.

You might inquire at one of those examples as to what was used.

Not a good idea to use a propane torch on concrete, a good chance you can pop the surface right off of it.
