how much (new cheap hollow masonite)door to trim at bottom for carpet

how much door to trim at bottom for carpet .

Replacing a Door and frame that opens to a carpeted room.

Cut the frame to fit the Rough Opening.

Now the Door Touches the floor Carpet .

I rather trim the door before installing it.
Carpet is the regular carpet that you find in HD or Lowes. The general kind.

Usually you want about 1" space under the door.

Be aware that the wood at the bottom of a hollow core door is only about 1.25" thick so you don't want to cut more than absolutely necessary .... or plan on replacing that wood.

The plug at the bottom of those doors can be CAREFULLY removed, then cut your door-skin down an inch or so, then slip the plug back in the door.

Not as hard as it sounds. Care and patience is your friend.

Long ago I reused the bottom piece of wood but between removing it intact and removing the glue I found it's a lot easier to rip a replacement piece from a 2x on the table saw.

A Spoke-shave, does quick work removing the glue.

That's a bet, that I won't take.

And probably even less under 100, that knows what they were for.

Okay Ed. Super curious here, can you post a couple of pics and what it was originally for?

Best that I can do is to post a link to an ornate one for sale on e-bay.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/J-Y-Simons-...cAAOSwoMddVx0m

A search there turns up 1,050 , for sale, do a see similar there and see them all.

They were designed to form the SPOKES for the old wooden wagon wheels, in the centuries of yore.

Some had curved blades to make the spokes round, others had flat blades to make the actual "tire" of the wheel flat, then an Iron tire was formed by a blacksmith for the heavier duty load hauling wagons.

There are sites on the internet that have much more information.

Search for wheelwright to read more.

Re: how much (new cheap hollow masonite)door to trim at bottom for carpet

Great answers thanks all. In my case I used a simple sol. I checked the old door height and setup and cut the bottom to that size . Being careful first time I cut less than actual did a dry Fit and then cut some more again . Its perfectly FLUSH and finely just grazing the top of the carpet nicely.

NOW THE BIG QUESTION : Once you get the solution how do you close the thread in a humanely possible way so further post on the thread are not posted. Thanks

So you got your closure. Leave it as is. 10 yrs from now, someone may think of a better mouse trap and may want to add it.
