Temporary Window Pane Insulation

My AC is broke and I'm having a heck of a time getting it fixed/replaced. I'm trying various things to keep the heat out, particularly on the southwest side of the house. I had white paper taped to the window with a sheet of some sort of foam board insulation. However, I'm concerned it's absorbing heat making it hotter in the room. How should these foam boards work? Or should I not use that?

I don't know exactly what the material is, but it's yellow-ish with silver backing. I got it for free 10 years ago and can't read the writing as it's mostly faded. It is a legitimate piece of insulating material. It's not some cheap craft foam or anything like that.

Preferably you would temporarily block the light on the outside of the house, before that heat even passes through the glass. Could be as simple as cardboard.

Put the silver to the sun to reflect it.
Insulation is supposed to absorb heat instead of letting the heat go thru. If it is getting warm all the way thru, it is working but just not thick enough for what you need.
Windows on Wash likes this.

If something like HOA rules don't prohibit, try good old aluminun foil on the inside so the shiny side can reflect out. That should do better than white paper. Keep the foam board up after installing the aluminum foil.
