Old sheathing, is it safe?

Ive got two 4x8 sheets of celotex sheathing, made out of some kind of brown material On back of sheets it says insulating sheathing, IBrated R2.06. Is this full of asbestos? Can I use it? Is it safe? If not safe how do I dispose of it?

Break it up and trash it. Don't breath the dust. Its unlikely to have any asbestos in it, but its still not good for you.

Notice also where it also says something about being flammable?
Really want that in your walls?

Is there a date on it?

Re: Old sheathing, is it safe?

If it is the brown "fiberboard" sheathing from the 70s/early 80s, then it is made from cellulose fibers. Just dispose of as any construction waste.

Older 1920-60s types of products Celotex made for other uses may have asbestos though. Some reading here: Celotex

They still use it here behind drywall for sound proofing, well help with the sound anyway.

Re: Old sheathing, is it safe?

It is ok to use within its limitations. It is not structural so it cannot be used in braced panel situations without other bracing. It does not hold nails. Siding or subsequent applications have to be installed with longer nails into studs. Used as intended, it is ok to use.
Houses in western NY used to be sheathed with it. The framer would either put diagonal bracing at the corners or substitute one sheet of plywood both ways at each corner.
