Insulation type?

I just bought my home and going to be doing some remodeling found this insulation and wondering what kind it was. Just want to make sure it's not asbestos or anything else dangerous.

Re: Insulation type?

It looks like vermiculite to me and if it is there is a chance of having asbestos in it. You might want to send it in for testing.

Re: Insulation type?

Christoff's comment is accurate. The Libby mine in Montana mined vermiculite for many years for use in potting soil, insulation, and other applications. Unfortunately the Libby vermiculite had asbestos content, and was widely distributed. The only way to tell if a product has asbestos in it is to take it to a qualified laboratory for testing. It is not possible to do a visual examination to determine asbestos content.

Re: Insulation type?

Between the potential health risk and the definite negative impact on future buyers, testing is a good idea to be sure your next step is the right one. Mail in a sample and save the results, it isn't expensive.

Another determining factor would be the age of the house. Homes built prior to the mid 80's are potential locations. In general 1981 ish but products in the pipeline were still being used so no hard date.

Re: Insulation type?

Looks like cellulose to me but as mentioned above better to be safe than sorry. Get it tested to know for certain.
