Insulation Type?

Hello all! just bought a house about 4 months ago, just crawled up into the attic about 10 minutes ago to see what the insulation situation was looking like. Does anyone know what type of insulation this may be? It's a very hard material and almost looks /feels like concrete. Is it safe to go over it with the new insulation?

Looking forward to your response!
Thank you!

Re: Insulation Type?

Hi Finessed and welcome to the forum.
Only thing that comes to mind is what I've heard called a double plastered wall, in this case a ceiling. Does the house have lathe and plaster on the ceiling? If so I'm guessing they went into the attic and added more plaster from the top.

Now, old plaster can contain asbestos so you may want to have it tested before you do any demo or sanding. If left undisturbed it should be fine and adding more insulation above it should not be a problem.

Hey Bud.
Thanks for the welcome and the quick response.
I know the walls are lath and plaster, I am not positive about the ceilings but I'm guessing so. I'll take your advice and apply the new insulation over it so I don't disturb what could be asbestos.

Thanks again!

Re: Insulation Type?

Some of the shiny bits might be vermiculite, but not all vermiculite was ACM.

You can get it tested (not expensive) to be certain.

Be sure to air seal prior to insulating.

---------------------------welcome to the forums!-----------------------------

I don't see any value adding plaster to the top of your insulation as pictured. Looks to me like someone was painting up there and dripped on the floor boards and joists... may be cellulose- it crusts over from repeated wet/dry cycles in the attic.... 7th photo down....not vermiculite insulation; last photo;http://inspectapedia.com/insulation/...tion-Guide.php

Pick the spill up (if localized) and examine it and send us a closer picture. May be very old fiberglass blown-in instead... all flattened out (from its own weight- probably installed level with the joist tops originally- SOP back then.

17,000 dryer fires a year, when did you last clean the inside of the dryer near motor or the exhaust ducting?

Re: Insulation Type?

#1, No location in your profile,
I'm not seeing any real insulation in that picture.
This should have been noted in the home inspection!
