Insulating between joists above basement windows

I'm in the process of adding insulation to the basement walls of my 1950's brick house. Right above the windows, there was a strip of metal lath and plaster covering the area shown in the pictures. I plan to do drywall returns but should I try to insulate these spaces somehow?

Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Yes.

An effective way to insulate the rim joist is what's commonly referred to as "cut and cobble" where you take pieces of EPS foam board insulation that are slightly undersized, place them in there, and then fill the gap around the edge with spray foam to create a seal and hold the EPS in place.

Cut and cobble with some copious application of canned spray foam should do the trick.

Don't know about the code where you are, but foam needs to be protected with a layer of non-combustible material around here. Drywall and a mud coat of tape works.

Strange how they apply that rule out here. Crawlspace and attic not so much
Even when furnace is in crawl space.

Figured the OP was finishing the basement.

If not, cover it with roxul or other fibrous insulation.

I used foam and put drywall up, just need to mud and tape the corners.

Thanks again!
