Insulate basement ceiling

Is it necessary to insulate a basement ceiling? Is it more for temperature control or noise? Can the same batte product be used for walls for the ceiling as well?

Noise. Makes no difference in terms of insulation if it is between currently conditioned spaces.

Windows on Wash, not saying your wrong, just had a thought. Wouldn't insulation and drywall in the basement ceiling keep the warm air from rising up into the upstairs living space, therefore keeping the basement warmer? Just asking because I am about to finish the rest of my basement (most is already finished) and was going to put some insulation up bit if I don't have to....

If the spaces are both conditioned and the system is balanced, insulation between floors is not required.

The sheathing is no more air permeable than drywall.

Insulation is cheap. If you want to insulate it for any number of reasons, go for it. You aren't going to hurt anything.

I installed rockwool insulation in my grandsons basement room ceiling for soundproofing with good results. If i was to build a house, all bedrooms would get that treatment!

That makes sense Windows...thanks!

78vette, I might have to look into that. I need to insulate a wall for my son's basement bedroom that shares a wall with the storage room which houses the sump pump (and is the same wall his bed will be along) so I need something to help dampen the sound of the pump...

Batting does help with the sound and despite its marketing (I believed it as well) as a better soundproofing, Roxul is no better than fiberglass.

Between the joist/stud/framing member insulation does help with the sound but a majority is be transmitting on the framing so don't expect it to be sound proof.
