how to insulate floor

My house was built in 1918 and i am wanting to insulate the floors from the crawl space. the joists are 2x10 and the crawl space is only about 2 feet so not a lot of room to work. doesn't look like there has ever been a water problem so what kind of insulation is best? Do I use open faced or paper backed? there is only 2 vents for the crawl space but no mold or rot present. Thank you.

Re: how to insulate floor

Where is the home? Ductwork or plumbing in the crawl?

Re: how to insulate floor

In that case, clad the underside with foil faced foam. Tape and air seal the seams. I would still insulate and air seal the bandjoists as well as put some insulation toward the earth sides of the joists.

Not sure what you mean by foil faced foam. Are you talking polyiso?

Re: how to insulate floor

Yes. But there are other foil faced foam. Something that will be resistant to any moisture degradation.

Re: how to insulate floor

I was just thinking how hard it may be to install 4 X 8 sheets in such a tight area, let alone getting them in there.

Ours is similar to yours. We did the spray foam about 3 years ago. I am really happy with the results. Although itís not really diy or inexpensive

If its tight, the work is not for the faint of heart. Definitely something that I would prefer to pay someone for.
