Garage loft rafter insulation

I live in zone 5. I have a detached 2 car garage that needs a new roof, right next to my own house i built myself after tearing down the existing. Took 2 years but i got it done all by myself with the exception of insulation, my hickory floors (from trees on my property) and hanging the drywall.

Anyway, my 700 sq ft garage has a small loft above it. The roof needs replacing. Has a flat rubber roof on one side and skylights on the other. Roof is the only real problem. It leaks. I want to make the loft bigger, man cave. Rather than trusses I'd like to go with rafters to keep the overall height down amd maximize space. A 3/12 pitch for a standing seam roof to match the house. The proper code way to do it, I believe would be flash and batt. 3-4 inches of closed cell on the under side of roof deck and batts under that. Closed cell being expensive what are my other options? Baffles with high density batts and a vented ridge and soffit? I know how to insulate the lower level and the wall cavities. But the rafters are my only question...without spending 3,000 on foam.

Hand framing over living space like that, 2x10 rafters are called for and when venting bottom to top is not convenient they have it strapped with 2x4 the opposite direction for side ways venting. Then insulate with bats of your choice.

Appreciate it! Unrelated to insulation, should go 18 or 24 centers for the rafters

Your choice is 16 or 24. We always had an engineered plan and I never asked why but I have done both.
