Finishing ceiling insulation w/ paneling

In Los Angeles, by code you have to finish ceiling insulation with drywall or paneling. Can you just use any paneling, even if it's labelled as "wall" paneling? If so can anyone recommend a LIGHT paneling? I would like to find some thin paneling that is much lighter than drywall.

I would build some 1 X 2 framing to hold up the paneling. Looking to insulate an open beam ceiling.

IF it says "covered", then unless they stipulate the covering, it can be paneling. However, be aware of sag with thinner paneling. You may have to put your strapping closer together than normal to keep it straight.

And what's the plan for covering up all the seams?
I've seen paneling used a few times by DIYS and to me it always looked like poop.
Far better to use drywall or T & G 1 X 6's.

++ on the T&G. Yeah, more expensive, but so much more of a solid ceiling and the looks will POP.

All I care about is being up to code.

I don't want all that weight up there.

What is the concern with the weight, putting up or keeping it up?

I just think it might be too much weight for this open beam ceiling roof. Beams (3 1/2' X 5 1/4") are 32" (on center) apart. Was discussed a bit in this thread... https://www.diychatroom.com/f9/extra...t-roof-671951/

Drywall would be like 51 pounds per 4X8 sheet. I'm not sure T&G wood would be much lighter.

Now I remember you already have fire rating for the roof, but you will still want 2x4 strapping at least 16" on center. You could look at dropped ceiling

Re: Finishing ceiling insulation w/ paneling

Agreed. With 32" oc, you will need to add strapping, so logic about the sheetrock versus the T&G isn't there. You wouldn't necessarily need the strapping with the T&G. Sheetrock plus strapping would be much more weight than T&G. As far as paneling goes, I would not do it with less than 3/8", but you still would need the strapping.

Are those sheets of paneling or insulation?

I was thinking of building my own "strapping" between the beams using 1 X 2's, leaving the beams exposed.

With the beams exposed you don't get much insulation.
There are lots of panels that would work with them but i have only insulated the 1/2" sound board type that are painted white on one side.
