Chimney letting heater warmth escape

There is a fireplace in my home. I plan on never using it. I plan on keeping the home for five years. Is there a quick and easy way to close up the chimney so the heat does not escape?

If it is a wood burning fireplace there should be a damper you can close to take care of most of the air flow. They also make chimney pillows, never used one, but they can be inflated inside the chimney to block it.

The risk is someone will come along and try to start a fire and not know the chimney is blocked. There have been instances of a house guest that's not familiar with that issue flooding the house with smoke.

Adding to Bud's comments, if you do use anything but the damper to close up the opening, be sure to attach a string to it with a weight or something that will lay in the bed of the fireplace. That way if someone decides to use it, the string will be readily noticeable and alert them to the obstruction. The string will be innocuous otherwise.

I've seen a few insert a piece of plywood [cut tight] into the opening to close it off [mostly older homes without a damper] Most just paint the plywood a dark color to blend in with the fireplace but I suppose you could also decorate it with some art work.
