Bonus room floor spray foam?

I know the best way to spray foam a bonus room floor is to spray from underneath, directly on to the underside of the floor. But how much less effective would it be if you sprayed the top of the drywall from above, then added batt insulation, then installed the floor?

Depending on the climate, spraying the foam to the bottom, with an air space, is the more effective approach. It allows the roomside heat in heating applications to circulate and warm the space below.

Re: Bonus room floor spray foam?

This will be in Texas, so I'm mostly concerned with cooling. The drywall is already in the garage below, but the bonus room floor is not in yet. I'm just curious if I could insulate it properly from above so I don't have to pull drywall.

Your approach should not be a problem in a hot climate as that is the same way a wall assembly is often insulated. Be sure to air seal all seams and penetrations into those cavities that the foam doesn't take care of.

Is the foam open or closed cell?

+1

Still works. Be sure, as Bud stated, that air seal is done well. We worry about communication with the garage and fumes in bonus rooms type applications as much, if not more so, than energy loss.

I was going to use closed cell. If I spray from above, I will still have room to add more insulation before I lay the floor. Do you guys think blown in cellulose would be better than batts?

When additional air sealing is desirable the cellulose does a good job of covering everything. In your application, the spray foam will take care of most and some caulking of holes and seams the rest. Although I like cellulose I see no strong additional benefit here. For batt insulation, consider Roxul (mineral wool) very dense.
