take less...every time I made an offer, he raised the price. He was up to
30 bucks before I agreed to pay the 20 bucks! ( I started my offer at 15
bucks)

I told him I was going to mount a bird feeder on top...he said,
"yer gonna get rats lady!" I told him we been feeding the birds
for years and we never had rats! ...his response was "yer gonna
get rats lady!" So, I paid the 20 bucks, and again the biker dude
shouts out as we were leaving the shop, " ya gonna get rats lady!"...

We went home, mounted it on a pole and put a feeder on top and
filled it with black oiled sunflower seed...everybody happy!

Sure enough, the biker dude was right, about a week or so later,
to my horror, we had rats! They were feeding on the grass
below the feeder...They were brazen as can be...and chased
the squirrels and the chipmunks away to hog all the food.

The head groundskeeper got out his BB gun and began shooting
them from the upstairs bedroom; he also kept a gun in the dining
room by the door -- so that he could shoot from downstairs.

So, one day he was upstairs shooting rats from the window,
and our son comes
over and says, "where's Dad?" I said, "well, he upstairs shooting rats!"
"Wat!" he said, and he quickly ran upstairs...A minute later, he comes down
and says, "Dad said there is another BB gun down here." I told him
it was in the corner of the dining room...he grabbed the gun and
said, "I feel like
a hillbilly! He ran up the stairs two at a time shouting, "I'm coming Pa!"

I still crack up every time I think about that day!

Anyhow, the rats never came back. It took several weeks, but he did wipe
out the whole damn family! ...He sure had fun in the process!
Awww shoot, that is not what I wanted to hear, I guess I will be getting a BB gun also. Here in the city we are allowed to shoot any type of gun, but I wouldn't feel that would work as houses are too close together. Now get this, shooting firecrackers in the city is against the law.

The bird feed we buy has about 50% black sunflower seed. The red birds love them, so does the little chipmunk, we call him rocky now. LOL

Re: Squirrels!

Last time I cleaned out the grill I bolted some 1/2" hardware cloth over the three air holes in the bottom, just to keep out the squirrels. They get in there because they crave the salt and the grease, things hard to get in their diet. They can still get what's in the drip cup and what falls through the screen.

Re: Squirrels!

If you want a pellet rifle for in-town use, get a cheap CO2 operated one from Walmart, which will have a lower subsonic muzzle velocity and will not make the characteristic rifle crack.

The pellet rifle with a wooden stock that you pump once or a few times has much higher muzzle velocity.

Re: Squirrels!

Jim, they never came back, at least they're not visable.

Don't worry about it...get the BB gun if you see them..
honestly, we never saw them for years and years until the biker guy
jinx us.

This is the woodpecker in the winter waiting on the arbour for
the suet, his favorite food...he also likes the seed, but loves the suet
in the winter.

Re: Squirrels!

This is from last summer...
this is the same arbor in the summer...Doves build their
nest in here...They are such wonderful peaceful birds.

The mother never leaves the nest, she sits on the eggs,
then stays in the nest with the babies until they are ready
to fledge...The Pop is busy going back and forth feeding the Mom and
the kids...They are beyond adorable...

Here's the nest in the arbor...they are used to the head groundskeeper
bothering them to check on them everyday. She is nesting with
three babies.

They are currently building this years nest in the arbor. They started
yesterday.

Re: Squirrels!

We love the doves and have had at least 15 or so at one time in the yard. We have Orioles, House Finches, Cardinals, Doves, Carolina Wrens, House Wrens, Sparrows, Mocking Birds, Thrashers, several more and a few I don't know what they are. A couple of Sparrows have their nest, with little ones, in our Pampas Grass that we are watching.

I want the strongest BB gun I can get, when I shoot one I don't want to wound it.
