small squash

My squash plants have produced very small squash. They only get about 4 or 5 inches long and about 1 1/2 inch in diameter. I planted crooked neck, which is what I always plant. I am getting a lot of squash but they are very small.

any ideas? Pete

Re: small squash

Hi Pete, hard to suggest anything (not a pro on this) at this stage, but I remember many years ago my mom loved squash. One year she planted about 6 hills and at some point someone dropped a few sunflower seeds in the hills. In those hills where the very nice sunflowers took off the squash plants and fruit were twice the size of the others. I'm not sure why, but sunflower seeds were added every year after that and the results were great.

Been a somewhat dry year in my area, just a thought.

Re: small squash

Wal-mart brand "miracle gro", for fruit bearing plants.

It is different than flowering plants food.

Your soil is probably depleted of the nutrients needed, That's why the sunflower trick works for others, some plants put nutrients back in the soil, that other plants depend on.
