Is my Japanese maple dying?

Hi, a couple years ago varmints too off half my Japanese maples trunk. It looks sickly... Anyone know if it can make a comeback with a little help or should I cut my losses and replace?

You take a close-up picture of the trunk, it looks like part of the trunk doesn't have bark on it. To the trunk actually split when the Vandals damaged it? More close-up pictures of where the damage occurred etc. would be very beneficial.

Apologies for the delay, Mother's Day took priority. I have attached a close up picture of the trunk, any insight is much appreciated!

Re: Is my Japanese maple dying?

I take it the damage was several years ago because you can see where the tree is trying to heal over the wound. I'm guessing right now it's going to probably live but it's never going to be nicely shaped nor an elegant tree.

Given the location of the tree and how visible it is I would probably just remove it and put a new one.

Darn, I figured it was on the outs but was hoping there was some arborist sorcery that could bring it back to its former glory. Off to the nursery I go...

Thanks!

Nuthin wrong with that tree. I'll take it.

A little shaping a little pruning, I think it has character.
