Installing A Rock Garden

Hello All,
I am looking for ideas or pictures for installing a rock garden at the front of my home. The area will be 5 feet by 24 feet.
My initial idea is to place down landscape timbers and then add one inch of pea gravel and then maybe some type of decorative stone.
I also have some figurines of angels about 6 to 9 inches tall that I will try to clean up and maybe repaint them and place them in various spots.
I even thought about adding a water fountain but I believe it will attract animals, especially the many deer we have.
But I want to see what is available before I commit myself to a final plan.

Think it best you ask some landscapers or gardeners to come out and give you some ideas. Offer to pay them for one hour....and ask lots of questions and take notes.

Get back to this forum.....later on

Go to your public library, read some HOME & GARDEN magazines, or find some landscaping books to barrow.

Look around your community at others creations, talk to the property owners.

Not everything is readily available on the WEB.

Re: Installing A Rock Garden

If you are thinking of also a few plants that use little water, look up Xeriscaping.

Re: Installing A Rock Garden

We went on rock hunts and found beautiful rocks for our garden and pond.
We had a few tons of flat rocks delivered, however, the most fun was hunting
down beautiful rocks.
Think small evergreen shrub and ground cover in between the rocks,
Vinca vine is beautiful. You didn't specify your area. Place your rocks
in your garden and build the plants from there.

Miniature Japinese maples are wonderful, dwarf mungo pine shrubs,
birds nest shrubs to name a few is what we have and look good
in a rock garden. We live in Zone seven.

Go to your local nursery and see what is available in your area.

Re: Installing A Rock Garden

I want to mention that other things that look great in rock gardens
are a sundial, a small planted birdbath and driftwood.

We have a short birdbath that we drilled holes in and planted with
a ground cover that comes back every year. It's awesome looking in MHO.
I like that it comes back each year in early spring.

Another trick for an awesome rock garden is to get your ground
covering going then you can bury potted annuals in the ground
covering for instant gratification.

Also mixing in some small cluster of pebbles is nice and interesting.

I can show some pics...we have a pond, however, what we did around the pond
you can do in a rock garden. Ours is well established so many of the rocks
are hidden in the photos.

Re: Installing A Rock Garden

rock path with slate stepping stones ....

Think vivid colors and variations in all the green shrubs for maximum impact.

Also, the more ground cover you have...the less weeding.

As you can see we don't have to do any weeding.
