How Long Will Unopened Grass Seed Last?

Store in the backyard shed. Want to buy two big bags, and over seeding at the end of winter (before last snow). Let snow push grass seeds into soil.

It may be another four months away from now, will winter cold temperature in shed damage grass seed?

Thanks.

Kinda begging hungry critters to come dine and less than optimal storage conditions. temp won't hurt it but moisture might. The farm store stores all seeds in a semi climate controlled environment.

Unless you are getting one heck of a deal and have better storage option, I would buy it when I needed it.

The question is : does home depot still sell grass seed in winter? They may be off shelves during winter season.

Well I would not be buying it at HD. I go to a seed store for a better value. Right after they sell all the plastic storage wear they start bringing in the seeds (feb-march)

If you can store it the house it will be fine.

Placing the bag into a galvanized 32 gallon trash can with lid, will prevent the vermin from dining on your seed,

And no , cold won't harm the seeds, in nature the seeds lay dormant over the winter, and sprout when the conditions are right.

I don't know if HD has anything stored in their warehouse over off season, but suspect that they do.

I almost always have some leftovers stored in unheated garage. When I
get around to using it seems to sprout just fine. Early spring/late winter
does seem to be a good time to seed.

Unopened seed will last until it's used next spring if the seed moisture content remains below 12 percent, otherwise Smut may rear its ugly head.

As others have said, so long as it stays dry it will be fine. I also store leftover seed in a metal can.

I'm not sure I understand your over-seeding method. You want to spread seed on snow but before the last snow? Your better bet would be to spread the seed very late in the Fall before the first snow, then left the snow press the seed into contact with the soil. Rule of thumb is the soil temperature needs to be below 10*C and stay there for the seed to lay dormant.

While it’s not ideal, I’ve kept grass seed for years and it was still reasonably good though fresh is still better.

Seeds are living things & that's not just the Californian talking.
This is a good article that includes storage.

Sorry, have a difficult time with links on this phone. I think you're the computer expert. Maybe you can just search Seed and Seedling Biology, Penn. State Univ. Extension. Good stuff.

And, a trenchant observation:

It seems that weed seeds, or other plants you don't care about, will stay viable for decades.

And, the plants you like seem to get stale overnight.

EXAGGERATING of course!

A little . . . .
