cucumber bloom

I had a lot of blooms on my cucumber, squash and zucchini but very little product. It seems that I had mostly male bloom. I had bloom that had cucumber etc but very few. I was wondering why I had all male bloom and very few female.

Is there a reason for this or is it just luck of the draw?

Thanks, pete

Re: cucumber bloom

I'll bite. I have never heard of a sexed blossom. Any blossom we have bears fruit, or pepper, or cucumbers, or squash. I wouldn't know what a male blossom looked like and I've been gardening for 50 years.

Re: cucumber bloom

Apparently plants have both male and female flowers (don't ask me to tell the difference). If the flowers don't look like they were nipped by a last frost, perhaps a lack of pollinators.

Re: cucumber bloom

Is a Cucumber bloom a perfect flower having both female and male parts? IDK, but I believe a tomato is.

Re: cucumber bloom

From the research that I have done I have found that cucumber, squash and zucchini have both male and female bloom. The female bloom must be pollinated from the male. The female bloom will then produce fruit. The male bloom, at some point, will fall off.

It seems that I did have a lot of bloom so maybe there wasn't enough pollination to cause the fruit to develop?

It was just disappointing to have so many bloom and no fruit this year.

Re: cucumber bloom

Our lemon cuke has a LOT of blossoms....but relatively few cukes. It has been REALLY hot here for a month (95 to 102 degrees). I do see bees on the plant. Our squash and zucchini are not producing as per the past years. My guess is hot weather....and when it cools down to 80's.....more veggies will appear.

Re: cucumber bloom

From my experience, blooms could really matter. What I usually do is, I add a fertilized soil so plants can grow well. It would also really helps if you have bees on your side for pollination. Sometimes those bees are hard to find these days.

Hope that helps.

Re: cucumber bloom

Try "hand pollination of cucumbers." Apparently, bees usually do it but we've been killing off bees with pesticides.

There are some plants that are either male or female, like holly. I couldn't find a male holly last year.
