Remodel with old adhesive and tears

Hello,

We are remodeling our master bath. There was wood paneling installed on top of drywall. When we removed the paneling, the adhesive either tore off the top paper of the drywall underneath or is now left behind on top of the drywall.

Either way, we have drywall with both tears in the top paper layer and old, yellowish-brown adhesive that will not chip off. Our plan is to hire someone to apply a knock down texture, but we would like to do the prep work ourselves.

What is the best way to approach this? It's not necessary for it to be absolutely smooth, since we will be texturing so we're wondering if we could sand down the old adhesive and roll on Kilz primer over it all to cover the tears and any remaining adhesive?

You're on the right track. Scrape whatever you can, roll the sealer & skim coat the wall. That's all that's needed.

Where the drywall paper is torn exposing the gypsum you'll need either an oil base primer or Zinnser's Gardz, that will prevent the moisture in the joint compound or latex primer from causing more damage.

Yep. Gardz is a must on the torn drywall paper.

Here ya go.
