Best way to mount sheetrock when floor to ceiling is 100"

I have added two non load bearing partition walls. The distance from the concrete slab to the bottom of ceiling furing strips is 100", or 4" more than the standard 96" drywall height.

The rest of the house, done back in 1972, they used a strip of 1X3 all the way along the bottom of the wall framing, nailed to the bottom plate. Then they put 3/4" thick gypsum boards on top of the strip of 1X3, making it almost 99", then they used 3/4" thick ceiling rock to make everything meet.

I am trying to decide if I should use a strip of 1X3 or 1X4 at the base so I can fit a full 8' sheet or should I plan on cutting a very narrow strip of sheetrock to bridge the difference.

I hate to buy a bunch of 12' long sheet rock (hard to transport too) just to cut to 99" or so.

LOL I am not planning on any crown moulding so the ceiling and wall has to meet.

Any idea why they put a 3" strip of wood at the bottom? Was this a standard procedure in the 1970s? Does it make installing baseboards much easier to have solid wood for 3"?

If I just leave a 3" gap, I think installing baseboards even if it's a tall one like 5" would be difficult as it would have to be attached up top and most likely prone to break if someone later on kick in on the bottom right?
