Picture 2015 Kitchen Redo
Actually we began this over a year ago by tearing things apart, but have only begun putting it together again in the last few months. We bought the house 4 years ago for a song. It was built in '61 and has never been remodeled, but is a 4-sided brick, very well-built and roomy with a partially-finished basem3nt as well. It was listed as being a good "project" house to fix up, but it had absolutely nothing wrong with it except that it was dated. Many around these parts (Dunwoody, GA) would tear a house like this down in favor of a McMansion, but we saw wonderful potential.

We had to take out the wall between the kitch3n & dining room, which required hiring a carpenter (trying to use words that won't turn into automatic blue ads) for the header, since it was a load-bearing wall. But other than that, we were able to do the rest of the demo ourselves. That made us happy, as we are old hippy DIY'ers from way back & like being self-taught, self-reliant & conservative with materials we've collected over the decades. However, this was a bit much even for us, so after getting a great deal on the cabinets, we opted to pay to have them installed.

We've broken down on the count3rtops as well by getting the granit3 we swore we'd never stoop to having, as it's so terribly ubiquitous and busy in our opinion. However, we're gonna be selling this baby in a few years anyway, so it needs to be what somebody else will want to buy, right? However, you might notice the refrigerator is white. All the applianc3s will be white. Just as with the granit3, we find stainl3ss applianc3s to be so incredibly overdone, we cannot understand their popularity enduring for such a long time. But that's just us. If copper-colored appliances weren't so prohibitively expensive, we'd've gone with them as well.

Somewhere we have some befor3 photos, & I'll post them as well when I come across them. But I never post photos online and when I found this site and that it has a place for albums like this, I just couldn't resist chronicling our awesome kitchen project. This is only the 3rd kitchen we've completely redone in our lives, and it is the first one we've hired so much out on. But we've also helped a lot of friends doing their hom3s, so we aren't exactly neophytes, either. Isn't it just fun?

Is this dry rot? It hasn't rained in months and there are no sprinklers near the fence.

Picture Fireplace Surround
My husband and I demo'd our circa 1980's brick fireplace and replaced with a vintage Mahogany Mantle with glass insert and new hearth. The new/old mantle came from a salvage store here locally and needed a ton of work - but we're very happy with the results.
