Old flip-top school desk
This old desk was painted a terrible green color. The green was applied over a red paint which; in turn, was applied over what appeared to be a shellac or varnish finish. The original finish (pickled oak?) was the type normally seen on old school desks.

I'm not sure how to re-finish the desk. I'd like to retain the basic wood look rather than paint again. I'd want the desk to have a highly polished look after completing the finish.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
