Silicon Valley going green

Silicon Valley, America’s tech capital, is home to some of the biggest names in the business world, including Apple, Facebook, and Google. And these massive companies have something new in common: the desire to make their business campuses more eco-friendly. This is going to involve more than “throw[ing] some solar panels on the roof,” according to Doug Woods, the co-founder of DPR Construction, a company rumored to be working on the Apple and Google campus facelifts.

Apple investing in trees

Apple, for instance, is planning on becoming completely energy-independent with the help of solar panels and fuel cells. Apple is also eschewing an outdoor parking lot—or “heat island” as environmentalists like to call it—for parking under their main building and a new parking structure. Then to add even more “green” to their campus, they’re planning on planting at least 6,000 trees on the 176-acre property. And these won’t just be your average thin, stick-like trees you get from a tree nursery. Apple is reportedly also going to plant 108 mature trees that “stand out for their size, age, or uniqueness.

Facebook’s buildings disguised as wooded hills

In another corner of Silicon Valley, Facebook’s roofs are going to feature full-grown trees as well. This will require about 4 feet of soil to be layered across the quarter-mile long building. Then they’ll surround the building with a berm so that, according to Katie Ferrick, chairman of the Menlo Park Planning Commission, “From not so far away, it will appear like a wooded hillside rather than a building.” Plus, a landscaped roof does more than just improve the looks of a building; it also helps reduce heating and cooling costs.

Great. I heard that even their products are going Eco-friendly as well. I hope more companies would do the same campaign.

When Silicon Valley gives up the muscle and high performance cars or even insists on some greater attention to mass transportation or even observable car pooling I will believe it.

I do not miss living there at all. Maybe high tech but also the most obvious demonstration of greed on the planet. Cannot ever go green but rhetorically with the culture it has. Look at the environmental damage it did just to build itself. Too late!

This will inspire other companies too. These days many new companies are redesigning and renovating their offices in eco-friendly manner. Planting trees and less use of paper is going common among sensible guys.
