Yuk! Shingle Packaging Is Awful!
Supply company dropped of the shingles on Tuesday, all 64 bundles. Brown paper wrapped on two pallets. Both covered with a snug fitting giant size plastic covering. On one the bottom bundles were somewhat exposed and wet. So I took a tarp out of the garage and covered both pallets as rain was eminent. Rained all day Wednesday. Thursday morning I took the covers off.
I noticed the top bundles were also wet on the pallet where I noticed the lower bundles wet. When I moved the bundles off the top (I was going to try to get the excess water off) I saw that this wetness was thick, slime like, and had a foul musty order. Each successive layer was wetter, slimier and fouler than the last. many shingles are wet. They will need to be spread out to dry before mounting.
It would seem these were kept out side and the plastic did not protect them. When water gets in between bundles it apparently will not evaporate and dry. Based on my limited observation paper or plastic wrapped makes little difference.

I hope when they dry out they won't be infected some kind of disease.
I can see the headlines now. Earths Shingle Slime Disease has reached epidemic proportions since being traced back to it's origin at the DocFletcher
residence.

All is well that ends well. Roof is done! Leaks already and it's not even raining yet!
Well , I went up there and watched the whole thing start to finish. Went very fast with 3 guys doing their thing. They didn't mind me watching at all. All in all I'm satisfied.

As someone about to put his own roof on.....that's not funny. I have enough of an ulcer over this!
Glad to hear it worked out well for you. Pray for me!

Now you know how it feels to be a contractor every day!
6" to 8" of rain last night with between 60 mph to 80 mph wind gusts in the NW suburbs of Chicago in the Fox Rivver Valley area.
Contractors spend many sleepless nights.

Ed, I knew already. Phew, it sure was tiring watching those guys. I felt sad watching them tear off my handy work that I worked on for so long 23 years ago.
FatAugie, just follow GAF instructions. Watch the training videos.

I think Ed would have quite a mileage charge to add to the bill, I'm in upstate NY.
Really the only thing I'm worried about (besides rain) is my back going out on me. That's why I bought a fall harness and a lift belt to support my back. It's a raised ranch, so the roof is pretty high up. As long as I miss the scaffolding and don't impale myself on it, I should stop before I hit the ground.
Worst scenario besides killing myself: - Tearing it off, THEN having my back go out.
I had it go out this past May and was sidelined for a month.
