Woody Smell Coming from Crawlspace

We had our roof replaced last September. Previous roof was very old. The contractor was really messy and a nightmare. After it was all done we looked up in our crawlspace to find fragments of the old roof and wood chunks. When the weather got warm over the summer we noticed a lot of heat and a "woody" musky smell coming from the crawlspace (access is located in a bedroom closet). The smell is really strong and overwhelming and was not there with the old roof. I am trying to determine if the smell is potentially hazardous and might be the result of the bad roofers. The crawlspace access is in our newborn son's room. Does anyone have any experience with this type of odor? Could this be harmful to breath? How would I find out what it is and if it is toxic?

Ayuh,.... What were the Roofers doin' runnin' through a bedroom, to throw trash into the crawl space,..??

I'd sooner think you have a Water intrusion issue in the crawl space, causin' the musty wood smell...

You'll have to find the leak, before blamin' the Roofers..

I can think of only one way that wood from the roof could ever end up in the crawl space.
If you have a really old house with ballon wall constrution and they tore the old wood off the roof to replace it, some may have fallen down inside the walls all the way to the crawl space.

But far more likly you have a moisture issue under the house.
Is there a 6 mil. plastic vaper barrier on the ground under the house?
Is the crawl space properly vented?
Is there standing water under there?
Ever had it inspected for moisture, insect mold and fungus damage by an exterminator? If not get it done, it's free to have them take a look.

C'mon guys, get with the program. Am going to assume the "crawlspace" is your attic access. Am also going to assume you had an old wood shingle with skip-sheeting. When they tore off some debris fell into the attic space.

First thing to do is contact the contractor. Kindly explain the situation and how you just now discovered the mess. Make sure you address baby's exposure to it (for urgency), and kindly insist he come out, investigate, and clean up the mess his crew obviously overlooked.

Let us know how that works.
