Whole House Fan

Hey Guys - recently moved in (about 1yr ago) to my first house. Its a split level where there is a ground level area, a mid level, then an upper level (where the bedrooms are). I'm not concerned wit hthe ground level as it always stays fairly cool down there.... What I would like is to install a whole house fan to 'cool' the rest of the house.

Anyone have details on them, ie where to install, how they are installed, if its a DIY job or other??

What is the volume of your house? It should be something on the order of 5000 to 10,000 cubic feet.
I guess you want at least 15 air changes per hour which would be >2500 CFM/500 watts for 10k cubic feet.

www.airvent.com is a good source for all ventilation needs and specifications.

This formula from the link

"Calculate the interior square footage of living area (do not include garage, attic or basement) and multiply the total square footage by three. This will give you the CFM number required for the whole-house fan."

gives 22 ACH, assuming 8' ceilings. Isn't this a bit on the high side?

I'd think at some point it'd be stealing combustion air.

It can, which is why you need to open as many windows as possible. I never saw any ratings on how many and what size would be required per the CFM or ACH though.

Just remember you'll need enough attic ventilation (roof) to get rid of the moist air from the living space. You'll get mold if you don't have intake/exhaust venting for roof. Ridge vents or another powered fan on roof should do it.
