Where/Why Was This Roofing Used

so im new here (my intro is in...'intro') ...
some of the projects/ideas ive had include this roof we have here.
this is a house my wife to be and i have pretty much ended up with and plan on TLC with the poor thing.

im posting some pics of the roofing system.
im not too sure of the pitch, but it isnt very high.
the whole house is exposed just like the photos excluding hallway, bathrooms, and closets.
they are 4x8- 32"oc beams (the beams in this room had the fortunate pleasureof being painted maroon)
the ceiling/roofing are some kind of fiberous panels (tongue and groove maybe) about 2" thick. they are in sagging condition. i dont know what the shingles are called... they are the gritty paper kind..

so heres my question(s)
Has anyone seen this before (house/neighborhood was constructed throughout the 50's in medium low income urban san gabriel valley (los angeles)?
how much longer do i have for these to last? there are leaky areas (not too bad... just to where the rain water stains the panels from the inside)?
Why was this system used?
What kind of roofing system would you recommend to update it without reframing a roof truss? I presume 4x8 on 32"centers would be strong enough for any new system.

My initial plan was to drywall just over the beams (ceiling would still be sloped from inside). later on i plan on framing in a 8' ceiling. this would leave plenty for insulation and all the goodies.

Answers and comments welcome =)
