What roofing material?

I'm going to need a new roof before too long, and I was planning on using the steel pannels, but realized today the house builders apparently didn't have a framing square, so the strait lines on the roof would look like crap.

I'm not a fan of asphalt shingles. anything else out there that is cheap to buy and easy to install?

Are you looking for something other than asphalt shingles or just cheaper asphalt shingles?

Contact a roofing contractor who can custom bend roofing panels on site.

.... western Michigan, lots of trees..... Are you close to where the falling embers will land if there's a big forest fire? You're insurance company might have a discount for non-combustible roof materials.

I didn't mean to suggest there are national news news fires every year or two, only that fires do happen and if they happen a couple miles upwind of your home, they will seem REALLY BIG. OP could call the insurer to at least ask about discounts, otherwise insurer never gets chance to say "yes" and OP does not have all the info for making the decision.

My insurance is something like $410 a year. I doubt any discout could be big enough to justify on material over another.

Well of course I agree, if you want to carve that out an look at it divorced from the myriad of other factors.
