What caused this damage to my roof?

Had to go up and fix a leak (deteriorated flashing) and after I took care of that, I decided to take a look at the rest of the roof. There is damage to my shingles at the peak on the east end of my roof, link below. What could cause this? My theories are either animals (I know one squirrel lives in the tree) or high winds slamming the branches into the roof. We have high winds fairly frequently. Anyone know what may be causing this?

It looks like animal damage from chewing through the roof shingles.

If it is a squirrel, then it is not covered by your home owners insurance policy, because squirrels are rodents, aka vermin.

A raccoon in a mammal, which would typically be covered under your home owners insurance policy.

The previous owners had the house for 10 years, and they didn't really do anything home maintenance wise. I think they should have cut the trees down a long time ago. As it is, the guy we had do the estimate says they won't be able to fully dig/remove the stump due to proximity to utility connections.
