Venting of Roof/Attic

2 Attachment(s)
I am new and have read posts on venting of attic, but wanted to get some feedback on my roof. I was told yesterday by a roofer that I do not have enough ridge to properly vent the attic above the main house (left of garage) & would need to use an attic fan. However, the area over the garage can use a ridge vent. The attic over the garage and main house are connected, but the roofer said they would be vented differently. It would seem that there may be a conflict. I have attached pictures so you can see house & offer your advice on how to properly vent attic. Thanks, Patrick

It is not working. We are looking at repairing or replacing our roof, so that is why this has come up. It also has a ridge vent in the same area where the attic fan is located. Please let me know how to properly vent this attic. Tks

The peak over your house is higher that that over the garage so the garage venting will not contribute to the house side. I would just replace the power vent. Better to be over vented than under.

Should the area over the garage have a ridge vent? of another attic fan over garage area? Tks for your help.

Both attics should be vented if they are over conditioned space (which they are).

If you are re-roofing, I would opt for passive ventilation as a default. Where is the make up air coming from (i.e. soffits or gable vents)?

Soffit and Ridge venting is the preferred method of venting.

See the attachment for proper ventilation technique.

Thanks for the info...very helpful. I have 20' of ridge over house. Roofer said that is enough to vent attic with ridge vent. We have soffits. Any additional feedback / advice would be appreciated.

Depending on the width of the ridge opening, that may be enough.

If you are going back with asphalt, keep in mind that ventilation will be a bit more important to allow for some convective air movement in the attic.

What are you putting back? I would hate to see asphalt back on in lieu of what was previously attractive shake.
